Caption: A Deaf Kenyan woman hand crafts a piece of jewelry for Sasa Designs. Sasa Designs by the Deaf is an organization of women-artisans who are flourishing in a new chapter in their lives making jewelry as a means not only to provide for their children and extended families, but also for the restoration of their own dignity; dignity stolen in a culture with little patience and understanding for those who are deaf. These ladies have faced a lifetime of discrimination, and “for the first time, they are recognized for their potential, and not for their inability to communicate with the world at large.”* Originally launched in 2011 as a subsidiary of DOOR International, Sasa Designs has grown to the point where as of October 1 2014 it is self sustaining and operating on it’s own. Their jewelry is sold locally in Nairobi Kenya as well as exported to jewelry shops in the USA. *Quote from Sasa Designs website
